10 Eastern and Central European nations met
for the Icograda Regional Meeting in Zagreb, Croatia
On April 11, official delegates from 10 Eastern and Central European nations met for the Icograda Regional Meeting in Zagreb, Croatia, to share information regarding the state of graphic design and visual communications in their countries. Members of the International Council of Graphic Design Associations (Icograda) presented reports and joined in an open exchange. This unique meeting represented the first time that graphic design associations from the region have met formally to compare opportunities and challenges related to design and visual communications.

Reminder: Last chance for registration
for the Icograda Regional Meeting in La Habana
11 > 12 June 2001

Latin America is often considered a remote region where nothing happens on the graphic design scene -- Latin America has a lot to offer but the world doesn't know it! Latin America has forged a rich and diversified culture in which graphic design has developed. Over the past decades Latin America had to face tremendous changes: political, technological, social, cultural, and environmental. In order to better understand how these changes have influenced the graphic design scene, Icograda will organize a Regional Meeting, an important gathering of representatives of graphic design in these countries. All facets of graphic design will be debated: professional day-to-day life, graphic design education, the Latin American style vs international trends, the contribution graphic design can make to influence people's life...
This will be a most valuable opportunity to express all the difficulties, challenges, and opportunities faced by Latin American graphic designers and to envision the future.
Participation in the Regional Meeting is by invitation only (priority is given to representatives of design associations, promotion center and educational institutions.) The hereinafter Application Form can be e-mailed or faxed to Icograda Secretariat, no later than May 15, 2001. Participation is free of charge. Participants will pay for their own travel expenses and accommodation.

Web directors, a new breed of creative professionals,
Capture what defines future online success
by Nicole Sors
There is a new breed of talent that can salvage the Internet. They are the new Web Directors, the online version of what has made film, television and print advertising and entertainment so successful. This is the time to propel them, generating a new platform and possible association for creative professionals engrossed with, and eager to learn more about, Internet capabilities.

What is your professional status?
Some designers like being their own bosses while others prefer the security of employment. Or is owning a studio everyone's dream?
Give your opinion and vote at http://www.icograda.org

Design and Ethics
Ethics and Morality were recently discussed during a round table in Zagreb, Croatia. A theme considered more than actual in the countries in transition and even broader. But do Ethics and Morality affect your daily professional life?
Surprisingly enough, it seems that a lot of designers either do not realize how powerful tool design is, or choose to ignore that fact...
Do ethics and morality influence your design work and professional behavior?
Always 35%
Sometimes 12%
No influence whatsoever 53%

"Read Me is an exhibition about signs and letters developed by B[cedilla]ro Br[cedilla]hlmann and the type designer Adrian Frutiger. It is a journey throughout the world of signs and letters -- it addresses everyone who reads and writes. The exhibition, which is modular and mobile, is designed as a touring exhibition and consists of four independent content units -- "follow me", "tell me", "shape me", and "see me", picking up up the theme of a different aspects of dealing with lettering, characters and signs. At the same time, Adrian Frutiger's life work runs throught the exhibition like a red thread.
The space for showing the exhibition should be at least 150 m2 in size. The concept makes it possible to present the exhibition elements in different kinds of halls.
The exhibition has been shown in Bern (Switzerland), 1999, in Winterthur (Switzerland), Brno (Czech Republic) and Ahmedabad (India), 2000.
For more information to host this exhibition please contact J[cedilla]rg Br[cedilla]hlmann at juerg@bruehlmanndesign.ch.
