Icograda Congress, Continental Shift 2001
Johannesburg, South Africa
Make sure to take advantage of the early bird rates for the Icograda Congress, Continental Shift, by registering for this unique event before May 31!
The theme of the Continental Shift 2001 Icograda and IFI Congresses combines the concepts of continental drift and paradigm shift, and reflects the impact of emerging economies on the global graphic and interior design professions.
Continental Shift 2001 will make use of an African perspective on global design to examine current issues facing the design community. Design is a potent catalyst for development in emerging economies and a key that can be used by established economies for gaining access to the new global marketplace. The Congresses will explore the potentials of "designing development", as well as the development of design.
The list of confirmed speakers includes: Saki Mafundikwa (Zim), Johan van Wyk (ZA), Reda Sijiny (Jap, SA), Pierre di Sciullo (FR), Katsumi Asaba (Jap), Javier Mariscal (Spain), Iaan Bekker (ZA), Dr Thomas Oosthuizen (UAE, ZA), Ian Sutherland (ZA), Joe Kieser (UK, ZA), Clem Sunter (ZA), Alexander Gelman (US), Max Bruinsma (NL), Garth Walker (ZA), Richard Buchanan (USA), Jeanne van Eeden (ZA), Lee Selsick (ZA), Jonathan Barnbrook (UK), Philippe Apeloig (US/FR)

Johnny can't read (because the words aren't worth the effort?)
by Jan Conradi
But I'm a designer, not a writer!
Isn't it interesting that as the general population reads less and less, words appear in our environment more and more? In advertising, packaging, and design in general, words have become key graphic elements. Designers love their texture and mystery, spending hours weaving through television commercials or websites built with Flash, often imposing the type-as-texture aesthetic onto the audience. Unfortunately, very little of that visual form actually carries consequential meaning. If the actual legibility of typographic forms is up for grabs, why have any concern for the communicative content?.

When do you prefer to work?
A few weeks ago, we have asked some questions about the habits and peculiarities of graphic designers around the globe.
Now that we know most of us work on weekends, the time of day is not surprising either. It seems most designers find the afternoons not so inspiring.
When do you prefer to work?
Mornings. 41%
Afternoons. 15%
Evenings. 47%

Young Packaging in Czech Republic
Endorsed by Icograda
Brno, Czech Republic
O: Design Center Czech Republic
C: Milan Kabat
E: milan@designcentrum.cz
This year's competition "Young Packing" was characterised mainly by an increased number of entries from the so far non-participating European and Non-European countries, with a perceptible swing away from the free design creation to a real solution of the design of packings and an increase in works using graphic design resolution. In the years to come organizers expect further expansion and intensification in the main tenet of the competition, i.e. stimulation of interest among young designers in such a usual and everyday material as paper or cardboard and further development in the increasing trend in numbers of specific packages.
Awards:
1. Secondary School Students: 1st Prize for a Packaging for sweets, dried fruit, nuts and for haberdashery by Kovalova Annamaria, School of Applied Arts, Kremnica (Slovak Republic) )
2. University Students: 1st Prize for a Packaging set for herbal products by Bazkow Magdalena, Academy of Fine Arts in Wroclaw (Poland)
3. Young Designers up to 30 years of age: 1st Prize for a Golf Balls Packaging by Jurica Jaroslav, Lidecko (Czech Republic)

Kinton: Human on the board
Publisher: Interfaces-Kinton
W: http://www.artazart.com
Human stupidity does not disappear as time goes by. It seems to find a new energy on the parchments progress keeps writing and as a matter of fact it sells very well on the sign market. Grounds for indignation and revolt have not disappeared with time. Some fits of angers could have been regarded out-of-date and promises for a better future could have turned into disenchantment. Yesterday's drawings still scratch under today's thoughts.
