A Proposal for Designers Commited to Solidarity with Others

As a creative designer with a great deal of initiative you have probably developed a design for social use or have thought of doing so but have not found a way to produce it, either because you are in touch with the potential beneficiaries, or because your proposal does not have any commercial interest for potential producers.

On the other hand, you might simply be interested in co-operating with humanitarian organisations or communities by offering your skills to solve problems through design and you do not know how to channel those intentions to make a real contribution and, therefore, your skills and growth aspirations are restricted to the demands of the conventional market forces.

Paladares
by Pepe Menendez, Prografica, Cuba

The Paladares are something new and tipical in Cuba. They are examples of small private bussiness, somehow primitive but very curious in many ways from my point of view.

Pepe Menendez was born in 1966. Design studies at ISDI (Havana, 1984-1989). Currently Design Director at Casa de las Americas. Design projects for Salsa Cubana Magazine, Ministery of Culture, Alliance Francaise, among others. Works exposed or published in England, Switzerland, Mexico, Ecuador, USA, Spain, Sweden and Canada. Lectures and exhibitions on Cuban contemporary graphic design.

[can design feed people?]
by Neville Brody

"The title for this lecture was a panic decision made within the space of a couple of seconds when pressed over the phone for the title by Shaheda, who is organising the Indaba conference. I appreciate it really, Shaheda. It was an instant response, but, I must admit, at that time I had little idea why or what it could mean. I had never really thought about this before, certainly not in such depth. All I had been feeling was a growing unease over many years about what I was doing."

On 27 April 2001 the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada (GDC), at its National Annual General Meeting, honoured two Canadian graphic designers with Fellowship status. Fellowship is awarded by the National Society to a professional graphic designer who, by accomplishment or influence, has made a major contribution to graphic design in Canada. It is the highest honour that can be bestowed by the Society and has only been granted to 44 other individuals since 1960.The recipients this year were David Coates of Vancouver, BC; and Elaine Prodor of Calgary, AB.
David Coates has always believed in taking an active role in the design community. Through his previous two-term role as President of the BC Chapter and past role of National President of the GDC, he has worked to foster awareness within business, industry and government of the value of effective design management.
Elaine Prodor has been a professional member of the GDC since 1991 and a founding member of the Alberta South Chapter. She has served on that local executive in a number of positions including that of President, and is now the Education Chair, serving as a liaison between the Alberta College of Art & Design in Calgary and the GDC for the past six years.

Life thrives in the media territories. Around this simple statement revolves the theme of the VII edition of Trattocontinuo: the Media Heroes If in the past before being able to play a role in the Media it was necessary to be successful in the real world, now it is just the opposite: the majority of successfulpersonalities come to life first in media space (television, internet, etc.) and from there they subsequently affirm themselves in real space.
The aim of the competition is to promote and make good use of the work produced by young visual designers, to help in the process of updating through training actions and to promote their entry into the world of work.
The international competition for young visual designers aged between 18 and 30. Candidates may compete individually with a single project.
