Icograda board welcomes two new associations.
The International Council of Graphic Design Associations (Icograda) announced today the addition of two new associations - from the Czech Republic and from China. Provisional membership, which will be ratified at Icograda's next General Assembly in Johannesburg in September 2001, has been granted to the Typo Design Club of the Czech Republic (Full Membership) and Tsinghua University in China (Subscribing Member). World designers to meet in Africa at Sappi World Design Convergence
A new generation of explorers is preparing to head for Africa in September, not to seek out the source of the Nile but to tap the source of global and African scenarios for design futures. Early clues to the primal energy and creative forces driving the African design renaissance were presented by the President of Design South Africa, Mr. Jacques Lange in a paper delivered at the National Design Week in Havana, Cuba. "But to really plug into African energy you've got to be there," says the Pretoria-based graphic designer and lecturer.
Already hundreds of designers, academics, entrepreneurs and trend-spotters intend to do just that. They are packing their bags for perhaps the biggest convergence of the world's design community ever staged - certainly on the African continent.

Designer's Dilemma: To Compute or Not to Compute?
One-on-One with Milton Glaser
by Andrew Shalat
Milton Glaser does not like the computer. On some level, it's understandable for Glaser to feel this way, since he did most of his work before the digital revolution was even a science fiction fantasy. So what if he doesn't like the computer? Why should designers care about what Milton Glaser thinks?

Amateurs working as Designers
Advanced computer technology has made it easy for anyone to work on a computer. To some extent it has made our lives easier, but on the other hand it allows amateurs to present themselves as designers and enter the market. These amateurs [greater equal]work[less equal] as designers and pull the prices so low that it creates a problem for the professionals. How does this problem affect you?

Do you regret becoming a designer?
Being a designer sometimes entitles more than we have imagined when choosing this profession, so we wanted to know how many of you have ever regretted your choice of profession.
In spite of the rather discouraging result from last week, when we saw that most of you consider even 84% of your clients to have a poor understanding of design, it is great to see that even 90% of you have no regrets in becoming a designer. Perhaps we are fond of challenges?
Do you regret becoming a designer?
quite often 11%
sometimes 30%
never 60%

A 36 page booklet designed to ease people who are either new to the print production world or are making the transition from "business" printing to high-end print production, through the sometimes painful process. It makes a great little reference book for even experienced users to double check their work.
