Icograda calls for closer relations with Icsid and Ifi
Brussels, Belgium
The Icograda Board, recognizing the need to conduct a serious investigation of the potential for closer institutional collaboration between the three international design organisations, Icograda, Icsid and Ifi, has been discussing the issue at recent board meetings and at Icograda Regional Meetings. Responding to a recent proposal made from within Icsid, Icograda President David Grossman has issued an open letter addresses to the world design community. In the open letter, Grossman notes the importance of the issue and stresses the need for serious and professional consideration of all the aspects involved. He notes that any proposal must contain detailed solutions that will serve the needs of all sectors of the community and will continue to address the professional needs for which the organisations were originally created..

Design Tools and Culture in the Digital Age
by Rafael Fajardo, MFA and Rex Koontz, PhD
This is a paper about what design does in the digital age. It is not a musing on the nature of design, nor is it particularly interested in the difference between the X-actoÅ knife and the lasso tool (both are nothing more than instrumental devices, after all). Instead, we focus on design and the secretion of meaning in a digital world. We ask the question: where are design and designers in the new structuring of meaning we see on the web and in other new media outlets?

How do you calculate your prices?
According to the results we have been receiving, many of you have problems getting paid, be it that you cannot charge a price you find reasonable or that the client simply refuses to pay for the work done. Now we want to know how designers calculate their prices.

Amateurs working as Designers
Advanced computer technology has made it easy for anyone to work on a computer. To some extent it has made our lives easier but on the other hand, it allows amateurs to present themselves as designers and enter the market. We wanted to know if this problem affected you.
Almost half of you seem to be bothered by unfair competition from amateurs working as designers. Not only do they affect prices on the market by pushing them lower than professional standards would allow, but this also indicates that a lot of clients appear to be unaware of the difference between the work of a professional designer and that of an amateur.
Amateurs working as Designers
It bothers me as they are stealing our jobs 45%
It affects me somewhat but not as a primary problem 35%
It does not affect me at all 20%
