South African Design Week Launched - 10 To 17 September 2001
To celebrate the important contribution made to society and national development by a diversity of industries involved with professional design, Design South Africa, in collaboration with the Department of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology and seven other government departments, will be staging the first-ever South African Design Week from 10 - 17 September 2001. Sappi World Design Convergence, the biggest international convergence of design to be hosted in Africa, will be an important component of the South African Design Week activities. Sappi World Design Convergence is an international design festival consisting of the congresses and general assemblies of the International Council of Graphic Design Associations (Icograda) and the International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers (IFI), as well as the Design Africa Expo, a multidisciplinary trade fair dedicated to professional design services and products.

How useful do you find price lists provided by design associations?
Even if you choose not to adhere to official price lists all the time, they can be at least valuable points of reference when forming the prices. Additionally, they are supposed to offer you some kind of protection, since they set some professional standard. On the other hand, prices in reality are rarely the ones stated in such official lists.

Do you have trouble getting paid for your work?
We wanted to broaden awareness of any difficulties the designer faces with financial rewarding of his/her work done. Seemingly, the same complaint ominously repeats itself - some clients blatantly disregard the principle of mutual respect that is there for the benefit of both parties..
What is clearly indicative is that more than a half of us are experiencing trouble having the fiscal reciprocation fulfilled. Moreover, it is alarming that merely every tenth designer does not experience hassle with regard to what should ideally be a smoothly run part of business. Indeed, instead of searching our brains for ideas and concepts, nine out of ten designers are further stressed by the uncertainty, instead delight, that pay-time brings.

The Cuban graphic designer Bachs died in Havana
The Cuban graphic designer Bachs died in Havana on Monday 23 July. Bachs designed more than 1000 posters in Cuba, the last of them was the poster of the Graphic Design Week, held at the time of the Icograda Regional Meeting in Havana.
