International Council of Graphic Design Associations announces New Executive Board

The newly elected Executive Board (2001 - 2003) of the International Council of Graphic Design Associations (Icograda) was announced today. The new board consists of nine representatives from five continents.. Robert L. Peters of Winnipeg, Canada has taken on the presidency from David Grossman of Tel Aviv, Israel who continues in the role of past president. Mervyn Kurlansky, now of Copenhagen, Denmark is the new president elect. Tiffany Turkington of Johannesburg, South Africa will serve as secretary general, and Apex Lin of Taipei, Taiwan takes on the role of treasurer. The four vice presidents are Jani Bavcer of Llubjana, Slovenia; Yu Bingnan of Beijing, China; Karen Blincoe, of Copenhagen, Denmark; and William Harald-Wong of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

At its first meeting, the new Board met with outgoing members of the Board who have just finished serving their terms. Outgoing are past president Guy A. Schockaert; secretary general Martha Bateman; treasurer Russell Bevers; and vice presidents Sanja Rocco, Sang Soo Ahn, and Leimei Julia Chiu.

The new Board was elected at Icograda's 19th General Assembly in Johannesburg following the Icograda Congress "Continental Shift 2001," part of the Sappi World Design Convergence event organized jointly with the International Federation of Interior Architects & Designers (IFI). This multi-disciplinary event was attended by 500 graphic designers and interior designers from around the globe.

The next Icograda Board Meeting, Regional Meeting, and Design Perspectives Seminar will be held from 26 to 30 November in Melbourne, Australia.

A highlight of the 2001 -2003 term will be the "Identity/Integrity" Icograda Conference in Brno, Czech Republic to be held in June, 2002. The two year term for this Board will end at the 20th Icograda General Assembly, held in conjunction with the Icograda World Congress being planned for October 2003 in Nagoya, Japan under the theme of "Visualogue."

New Urban Africa
Garth Walker, DSA, South Africa

Client wished to promote (to Europeans only) a CD of contemporary African jazz sound using authentic African images. Garth used images from his collection of "street design from South Africa" in the design. The designer wanted to reflect African jazz imagery in a fresh way.

The World Converged: Continental Shift 2001 Icograda Congress
By Jacques Lange

A new chapter of global design history was written on 11 September 2001 when the International Council of Graphic Design Associations (Icograda) staged its first world congress and general assembly on the continent of Africa. This day has subsequently become historic for other reasonsä Only a few hours before the opening ceremony of the Continental Shift 2001, Icograda Congress was to commence, New York City and Washington DC became the targets for four devastating terrorist attacks. Refusing to be paralysed by the cruel acts of terrorists who intended to disrupt all organised global activities, the Icograda community opted to proceed with its planned congress, even if it was in an adjusted form. These adjustments made the Congress more relevant and therefore more powerful.

Do you feel your business is doing better, the same or worse than three months ago?
As we try to ascertain what the major problems and issues in the graphic design profession are, we also want to keep track of the changes in the practice and your forecasts for the times to come. Since we are trying to establish the flow of trends and other issues regarding graphic design, we thought it suitable to have this question repeated every 3 or so months.

Does graphic design cross cultural barriers?
We asked you whether you considered graphic design to be acknowledged everywhere irrespectively of its origin. Indeed, it should be interesting to know if you identify an item of design with the milieu of its inception.

The result appears to indicate that most of you have a categoric opinion on this; the majority think graphic design does cross cultural barriers but only slighly fewer disagree, whereas the remaining quarter of you do not view this quandary as a black-or-white issue.

Does graphic design cross cultural barriers?
Often 42%
Sometimes 23%
No, it essentially represents the milieu it comes from 35%
