Design Conference on 'Identity/Integrity' planned for Brno

An international Conference on the theme is "Identity/Integrity" is being planned by the International Council of Graphic Design Associations (Icograda) to take place in Brno, Czech Republic on 19 and 20 June, 2002. The Icograda Conference will be held concurrently with the 20th Brno Biennial, as a part of an exciting week of design events at the 'center of Europe'. The Conference venue will be the Brno City Theater.

The Conference will focus on the critical intersection at which designers play a key role in the shaping of identity - between nations and citizens, between corporations and consumers, and between individuals and the public. The Conference will set a new course in terms of corporate identity - defining new approaches, integrating new values and taking the lead in terms of design development and vision. It will bring new perspectives to corporate identity, in the realization that the concept of corporate identity as praised in the '80s and '90s is no longer valid - due to rapid changes and crises in world social, cultural and economic structures. As stated by the organizers; "It's time for ethics to join aesthetics. It's time for integrity to balance identity."

Designers are specialä
by Andrew Lam-Po-Tang

Graphic designers, like many creative professionals, often find themselves in bewilderingly difficult situations when outside of their own studios. Why is that?

How difficult do you find creating something utterly original?
Sometimes it seems that everything has already been done, and yet, original and fresh ideas also appear to come so easily at times.

Do you feel your business is doing better, the same or worse than three months ago?
As we try to assess the situation of graphic designers worldwide, we thought of running this question periodically to keep track of changes and trends in our profession.

Well, this result doesn't seem to be very optimistic. Almost two thirds of you are experiencing worse conditions than three months ago. We hope this result will change over the next three months.

Do you feel your business is doing better, the same or worse than three months ago?
Better 18%
Same 19%
Worse 63%

The September Eleven Font is Released
W: http://www.myfonts.com/FontFamily21194.html

Motivated by the need to contribute to the ensuing relief efforts and inspired by  Claes Kallarsson's Font Aid project to support UNICEF, type designer Stuart Sandler  and the Society of Typographic Aficionados, launched the collaborative project, Font Aid II. The premise was to provide an outlet for designers to express their feelings and help raise money for the relief efforts, the culmination of their labors to be a font  made up entirely of question marks. On 13 September, the call went out to the type design community and the resulting typeface, September Eleven, is a moving compilation of 95 question marks from designers worldwide. It is now available to purchase at http://www.myfonts.com/FontFamily21194.html with 100% of the proceeds going to the American Red Cross.
