Cardiaferrania
Riccardo Falcinelli, AIAP, Italy
Cardiaferrania is an experiment of rendering a graphic novel as literary as possible; in fact is the first time in Italy a visual book is published (in its first release) by a literary publishing house within a selection of new Italian fiction. It is not a comic book, but a new way of telling stories.

The Primacy of choice - reflections on the SAPPI World Design Convergence
by Kurt Campbell
"The Icograda Continental Shift Congress was certainly an event I was exceptionally fortunate to have the opportunity to attend, thanks to the Icograda Foundation scholarship [for which I am truly thankful] that was awarded to me and a few other designers from the African continent, who I am sure I will continue to be in contact with."

Do you think graphic design associations should provide legal advice and/or action when the authorship rights of their member are endangered?
Plagiarism issues discussed in our previous question is but one example of designer's authorship rights being abused and jeopardized. As most of us belong to an association, do we consider their duty to protect us and offer legal advice and/or action when such an incident happens to one of their members.

Do you do pro bono work?
We wanted to know if you chose to do a project for free if it should be beneficial to the society or involve an idea close to your heart.
Bravo! This is one of the most encouraging results we have had in a while. Although a lot of our polls have shown that designers have to work really hard, encounter problems getting paid and do not get enough protection and support in a lot of areas, the vast majority of 90 percent of you still find time and good will to do pro bono work. Almost a third of you do it on a regular basis, and 61 percent does it occasionally for causes they consider worthy. There is, however, a 10 per cent who would insist on getting paid irrespective of the circumstances. Let's take a moment to remember that there are worthy causes in this troubled world of today to uphold and support. 2001 is the year of volunteers.
Do you do pro bono work?
Often, I find great satisfaction in doing so 29%
Sometimes, if it is something I really believe in 61%
No, I always insist to be paid for my work 10%

The Art of Looking Sideways
By Alan Fletcher
Phaidon Press
W: http://www.phaidon.com
"Alan Fletcher is the finest graphic designer of his generation. This book, which is of course beautifully designed, takes us inside his mind. He writes and draws about the things that preoccupy him, which turn out to be almost everything that's really important. Tellingly there are lots of quotes from children, because Fletcher looks at things with a child's mind - so that everything is new and fresh. It turns out that in addition to (or perhaps because of) being a great designer, Fletcher is also funny, wise, ecletic and quirky. It's both a masterclass and masterpiece." Wally Ollins.
