Congratulations also to Richard Thomas who was elected to the position of National Vice-President at the recent AGDA National Annual General Meeting. Richard's presence will continue to develop the impressive reputation the ACT Chapter has at the National level.
Winners Are Grinners
While on the congratulatory theme, best wishes are passed on to Jennifer Prosser. Jennifer's business Design emergency won the prestigious Industry Award for Excellence at the Excellence 2000 Canberra Region Graphic Arts Awards held at Parliament House in October. Other award winners were Pawl Cubbin who won the Canberra Region Honour Award, the Study Award went to Daniel Jackson and the Youth Encouragment Award to Mark Dogan.
Student Exhibitions
Well done to all students who have recently completed their design courses at CIT and UC. The CIT exhibition was held at Albert Hall with around 200 people witnessing the work of the 30 graduating exhibitors focusing on a greater use of typography. Almost thirty per cent of CIT graduates have already found work. The hugely successful UC exhibition was held at Questacon with 1000 people viewing the work of the 42 graduates. This year UC graduates moved more into electronic design with great success. As with CIT, many of the graduates have been snapped up by the industry. Good luck to all for the future.
New Members
AGDA ACT welcomes new members Sussan Rossely from SSB+BAM, David Bray from New Millennium Print, Gosia Orzechowska and Kurt Fountain from Green Words & Imaging and Paul Geach from Inprint.
From the President
Welcome to our new council members, I look forward to working with you this next year promoting professional graphic design to the ACT region.
Congratulations to council member and ex ACT President Richard Thomas on his appointment as National Vice President. John Frostell remains as National President for next year. Also congratulations to our own Jennifer Prosser for her recent Industry Award.
I was pleased with the result of the Boxing Match hosted by David Cumbers of Australian Paper. Facilitator Gary Wilson made sure that we all left the event as friends and were able to do business with each other the next day. Digital proofing was an area where both sides agreed that there is a long way to go. We all have to work together to inform our clients of the limitations of the system (at the moment) so that they don't get any nasty surprises.
We have another seventy odd graduates ready to hit the local scene. I was very impressed with the standard of design presented at both the CIT and UC Exhibitions. Good luck in your future careers don't forget to continue your membership with AGDA and take advantage of the seminars and fellowship provided by this Association.
David Whitbread and his team have arranged a huge seminar filled 2001. AGDA National have arranged for another International speaker, Scott Santoro from Manhattan USA who will visit Canberra in April--May, stay posted.
Have a safe Christmas and I hope 2001 will be a prosperous one for you all.
Bill Pearson, President
