"What I've learned over the years is this: Success in the business of design is more about business than it is about design. Most of us don't like to hear this, but that doesn't make it any less true."
Cameron Foote has just published an interesting article on what drives business success in design. He draws on his observations of design businesses that he has come across in his years as a business consultant to such businesses. While the article is naturally US-centric, his comments would appear to ring true in other markets such as ours.
At the end of the article there are links to Foote's own site and newsletter, Creative Business.
Enjoy!

"We went one further and produced http://www.dmzine.com a subscription website that takes our 20 years experience in managing a design studio. This is the practice of design management not the theory."

"I bought and read Cameron Foote's book whilst in the US a couple of years ago. It is a practical, how to guide to keeping your sanity in running a creative business (he targets designers and freelancers including illustrators, writers and photographers). The book gives excellent guidelines and templates for those starting out or wondering how to grow a creative business. I have referred many local design businesses to the book. Shattering as it is, his theme throughout is that success comes from business not the creative. As the quote on the DMI site suggests."
