One of the biggest challenges that a freelancer faces is marketing. Many freelancers 'get lucky' on their first assignments, and then don't think about marketing themselves until those first assignments are over. At this point, they also realize that they probably should have started their marketing efforts a lot earlier.

Shaun Crowley, a UK-based copywriter and marketing consultant has a website with some useful tips on how to frugally market your freelance business, and how to boost your freelancing opportunities.

Note: Shaun's freelance pricing figures are for US and UK freelance designers, so if you are looking for Australian freelance pricing data you will need to ask around in your local market - for example, Aquent, who is AGDA's official careers partner.

Shaun Crowley has worked as a freelance copywriter, marketing consultant, and communications manager for a major UK publishing company. His new book '100 Copywriting Tips for Designers and Other Freelance Artists' is available for download at http://www.copywriting-designers.com.

Note: This article is not an endorsement. AGDA provides access to issues and knowledge that may be relevant in your journey to become a better, more effective designer.

"Ian SR James - thanks for sharing the finer points of your turds in detail, Your pungent comments are destined for the toilet bowl. D Tudor's poignant approach says far more about design than you do."

"I agree with SR James... this site is looking very tired and unimaginative... and small fonts are passe... there are an incredible amount of options to develop the site where the functionality and usability doesn't come at a cost to the design aesthetics. It's time for a revamp."

"...this site looks like CRAP... call yourselves graphic designers...we've had better looking turds than the look of this site... lift your game wankers! : )"
