Jim Antonopoulos

As TANK’s Executive Creative Director, Jim brings experience and expertise for local, national and international organisations, garnered over 20 years working in design firms, digital agencies and brand consultancies. His multi-disciplined and strategic approach, balanced with a love of people and culture create a strong set of skills for AGDA. Jim has spent five years in leading roles on the National and State Councils of AGDA, consulted to other associations such as MADC and DIA and been an active member on advisory boards
for Design Victoria and RMIT.

Liana Lucca-Pope

Liana Lucca-Pope is a Monash design graduate and specialises in designing for print media. Since 1997 she has operated as Hired Gun Design, freelancing for a range of studios and agencies as well as managing direct-to-client work from her own small studio. She also sometimes teaches at Monash University.

A long time member of AGDA, Liana joined the council in 2007 with the goals of contributing to the connectivity of the design community, of striving to increase the wider community’s understanding of what we (designers) do and to work collaboratively with other designers to achieve these things. She remains on council because she’s a sucker for punishment and there’s always more to do. Any largely imaginary spare time is spent in the Smith St bar she and her husband cleverly created for themselves to ensure a consistent supply of free drinks.

Vito Tassone

Born in Melbourne, named Vito Antonio Tassone (drop the Antonio). Up to the time I went to Kindergarden I thought I was living in a suburb of Italy (big shock for a 5year old). Got a job as a bank teller for 3 years (exercise in boredom).

1993 Completed a Degree in Graphic Design and Visual Communication. 1994 Got a job at a three man design studio called Hope Productions (that included me). 1996 I changed the name to Hope AD (who wants to work for a company called Hope Productions). Became Creative Director, agency grew to 16 people. Had enough, co started The Surgery in 2000 from my spare bedroom (the best thing I ever did, except the bedroom part). A small note: creative thinking is important.

2004 Voted the hottest Melbourne agency under a million dollars by Campaign Brief. 2008 Won three MADC awards. Best Typography, Best Book Design, Best Self Promotion. 2008 Won bronze at the PICA Awards. 2008 Moved on from The Surgery (looking for more inspiration) Finally: do what you enjoy or it will kill you.

Quentin Brown

Quentin is Creative Director of St Kilda based design studio Canyon. With an international career that spans 15 years among industry's top agencies, Quentin has led award winning creative for sector heavyweights like Metlink, ANZ, NAB, Channel 7, Australia Post, RACV, Claude Neon, Sustainability Victoria, Grocon and National Museum. A start in the UK led to stints in Asia and South America, before establishing himself as a recognised talent in Australia in brand strategy, corporate identity, and graphic design.

Simon Ashford

Graduated in 1989 BC. (Before Computers) with a BA (hons) degree in Graphic Design from Leicester Polytechnic, in the U.K. I come with a multi-discipline background in traditional film animation, illustration, 3D game art, graphic design and design education.

What AGDA means for me is: becoming involved with and contributing to a dynamic and creative design culture. This translates to building relationships and supporting peers. AGDA is a forum for sharing ideas and discussion. It facilitates an opportunity to serve the Victorian design community.

Tim Kotsiakos

TimK, Creative Director of global digital agency Reactive, has an honours degree in graphic design and over twelve years experience. He has designed and overseen many award winning web projects including those within the fashion, corporate, retail and entertainment industries. His keen interest in all areas of design has offered him countless opportunities to contribute to magazines, speak at seminars & business events and judge design awards.

Jack Mussett

Immediately after graduating from an Honours degree (Communication Design) at the end of 2008, I set up Motherbird with 2 close friends. We work on a range of projects, but try to keep our process fluid and creative, having fun along the way. We endeavor to work on socially aware projects, such as Positive Posters. As a recent graduate I understand the difficulty in making the transition from university to industry, so as a studio we involve ourselves in many events/talks/seminars that attempt to bridge this gap.

Anita Ryley

Anita has been a practising designer for over 10 years and in 2005 co-founded Seesaw with designer and long time friend Matthew McKenzie. From humble beginnings, Seesaw has grown into a multidisciplinary agency servicing numerous clients across various industries including the arts, hospitality, architecture, entertainment, not for profit, construction and fashion. Anita recently judged the 2011 Fairfax Employment Marketing Awards and 2011 Brisbane Advertising & Design Club Awards.

Nicki Wragg

Nicki is the Head of Communication Design and lectures into the Honours program in the areas of Communication and Multimedia Design. She has worked extensively as a graphic designer since 1990 and continues to work as a design consultant in brand identity and publication. She has taught in Higher Education both in Australia and internationally and has a passion for ideas and collaboration. Her work with students has culminated in a number of interactive exhibitions coupled with an online presence of which Mission H20 was recognised as an Official Honouree of the Webby Awards.

Her current work with the Honours students, in Communication and Multimedia Design focuses on the intersection of practice and research, exploring the implications of design within the context of social patterns and new technologies. In 2005 and 2007 she received a Vice-Chancellors Teaching Excellence award and in 2006 received a Carrick Award for Excellence of Flexible Teaching Methods.

She is currently enrolled in her PhD at Curtin University of Technology at the School of Media, Culture and Creative Arts. Her PhD research examines professional designers* perceptions of interactivity and how those perceptions are implemented in design for the web.

Jenna Hipgrave

Originally hailing from Missoula, Montana (via Brisbane), Jenna Hipgrave has a penchant for paper engineering and sensibly priced wine with well designed labels. With over eight years experience in the design industry, Jenna co-founded The Hungry Workshop, a design and letterpress studio with her husband, Simon. In 2011, she spoke at the Look Hear conference and delivered guest lectures at Griffith University. With over four years on the AGDA council organising events, providing mentorship and professional development programs to the Queensland graphic design industry, Jenna is looking to bring her objective viewpoint and organisational skills to the council in Victoria.

Tracy Merchant

I joined AGDA in 1989, as a Visual Communication student at UniSA. I have mainly practiced design for print, but recently also instructed online in Typography and Design History. I like that we really get to use both right and left brain in our work, and that this cross-lobe activity makes us a bit special, or perhaps a bit weird. I value thinking, play, collaboration, taking a client's needs seriously and achieving clarity (in such a sea of information and messages). I thought it was about time I volunteered for AGDA service.

RMIT University

I started my life wanting to be a ballerina...clearly going to be bitterly disappointed on that front...
My grade 6 teacher was  an evil child hater. I love children. I love teaching. I love giving advice. My career path was clear! So I became a teacher, a Vice Principal, a librarian, an industry consultant, a trainer, the director of an antique business and now I'm ever so happily part of RMIT School of Design.
My whole professional and private life is about people and learning. Coming into design many years ago inspired me. Designers are fascinating people. They have our lives in their hands in many subtle and not so subtle ways. I attend every possible design related event and did so even before I taught designers and helped them into the design world and employment. Life is about finding what you're good at. Love doing and then doing lots of it, isn't it? I also love: mybeautifuldaughterchampagnepartiesmyfamilyandfriendsmyfathorsemusicbooks

Over the next decade, he honed his craft working with some of the greatest names in the industry, taking leading roles in many major productions (too numerous to mention) until, in 2000, the raw idea for “The Surgery” began stirring.

Already a regular celebrity on the red carpets of Fitzroy, Vito is now ready to embrace the fame and fortune that “The Surgery” will surely bring him and the talented team that he has assembled to support him.
